A Great Read Last Week: Here is the Prayer

Here is the Prayer
books
I stir in the dark before dawn. Black trees outlined through our windows slowly sharpen into focus as the sky lightens into blue behind them. I slip between sleep and waking, but eventually decide the dreams are gone for good. I think of turning towards the prayer book on the nightstand and resting my eyes on a morning psalm.
Then the baby starts to kick.
Gentle at first, waking as I am, but soon more insistent: jabs, prods, pokes, flips and turns. I frown and squirm; we’ve reached the impossible-to-get-comfortable stage. Here come the hiccups, too. My stomach shifts and lurches before my eyes.
I forget about the morning litany waiting on the nightstand. Here is the prayer.
. . .
We laugh in low voices as he gets dressed for work. The kids are still sleeping, and as I splash my face with warm water, I contemplate the sweet prospect of a quiet kitchen and a hot cup of tea. Maybe I could pull out the journal and pray for a bit before they wake. I slip on warm socks for the cold winter floors downstairs and turn the knob on our bedroom door.
Then I find our oldest boy waiting right outside, gazing up at me with wide eyes.
I sink to my knees and without a word he folds himself into my lap, clutching his beloved stuffed animal to his chest. We snuggle in the silence for a few minutes, and then he whispers, “Mama, sing ‘Morning Has Broken.’”
I forget about the journal downstairs. Here is the prayer.
. . .
The morning is a cacophony of kid sounds: laughter and whining and cries and squeals. So many questions and complaints and requests to help, to watch, to get, to come here please. My head is spinning by noon, and I’m dreaming of quiet nap times and a chance to center in prayer. I serve their lunch plates piled high with favorite food, and as I sink into my own chair, I’m tempted to tune out while they eat.
Then I see the two small faces in front of me, watching me expectantly.
I take a deep breath and smile back at them. I lean my elbows onto the table and ask them each what they want to do after nap. Soon we’re sharing silly rhymes and they’re teasing each other with nicknames. We share cookies after plates are cleaned, and I give silent thanks for the gift of two lively kids at my table.
I forget about the centering meditation. Here is the prayer.
. . .
Bath time always finds my energy at its lowest. Teasingly, bedtime is just around the corner, but there are faces to wash and teeth to brush and nails to clip and pajamas to tug on tiny feet. I pray for patience as I wrangle the wriggling, giggling boys into the bath. I can almost taste the freedom that comes with closing the last bedroom door, and I imagine curling up on the couch with the dog burrowed at my feet and an inspiring book to lift my thoughts.
Then they start to splash each other with shouts and smiles.
I can’t help but laugh at their simple delights. The water splatters the walls and soaks my jeans, but their mischievous grins make it all worth it. As the baby within me starts to kick again, startled by the sudden noise and laughter, I remember why I make the sacrifice of pregnancy in the first place: to bring this kind of life into the world.
I forget about the devotional reading downstairs. Here is the prayer.
. . .
Maybe the secret to prayer with small children is not memorizing the Our Father or teaching them grace before meals or taking them to church on Sunday.
Maybe prayer is about abiding. About presence. About seeing God in small moments.
The promise we make to our children echoes Jesus’ parting words of love in Matthew’s Gospel: And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. Maybe the prayer we teach them – the practice of God’s presence that we hope will sustain their lives – can be exactly this, too.
Prayer as beholding. Prayer as presence. Prayer as promise.
. . .
After books and lullabies and God-bless-everyone, I linger a few more minutes in the rocker, snuggling my youngest. His head of damp curls tucks right under my chin as he leans back on my chest, and I savor the sweetness of toddlerhood as we rock gently. In the dim glow of the nightlight, his pudgy fingers float up to trace my hair and he turns to me with dark eyes smiling.
Finally I glimpse the whole truth, the God-soaked-ness of each moment with them today.
Finally I am here. Here is the prayer.

Sharp Shooter!

Great day at regional contest last week!  He said he made 22/25 (I thought it was 23).  He was the first shooter and the second guy made 24.  There were 13 and many really were doing well - not much room for error with these boys. We were happy he held on to 2nd and received a medal. Top 12 in state for sure (he may have won at a different regional, who knows). We were all happy for him.  Our neighbor was there, too, and also placed 2nd in his group.

Batter Up!

Just wants to be like his big brother!  So cute to see him go get these at the batting cages.  Batter up!

Random Thoughts

A few things from this week:

Leah's career aspirations: she mentioned she thinks she may want to work at Crayola.  She thought maybe she could sort crayons and but them in boxes, or maybe she could make markers, because she knows how to make markers (she got a marker maker kit for Christmas).  She had an elaborate plan but also wondered for sure how to make the pink and gray since with her colors, she could make red, but not pink.

Anne's goodnight sentiments:  she's been mimicking me lately in a cute way and repeating what I say. So, she'll usually say, "Goodnight big angel, or "Goodnight my darling sweet pea." It's pretty cute hearing her come up with things to say.

I know there were a few more things, but I can't remember at the moment.

Parenting...

The days of parenting are long, but the years are short.

I'm not sure who said this, I certainly can't claim it as my own, but I sure do agree with it.  That's probably what keeps me from keeping my thoughts and family updates from being recorded regularly.  I enjoy every day with this family, but by day's end, I sure don't typically feel like I'm ready to sit at the computer and record too much.  Ready for sleep!

Funny that I'm even writing anything tonight.  We had a full day of running since 8am and for some reason I guess I'm feeling reflective.  I'm the only one awake right now, just finished planning some school for next week (usually a Sunday evening thing - so that feels good), and then just figured I'd take a few minutes.

Very quiet, I can only hear the rain running down the gutters.  So peaceful and feeling very grateful for a wonderful life.

Words from Anne

I am regretful of so many things that I'm sure I won't remember since I'm not getting them recorded often enough.  However, I am fully enjoying the moment when things are said.  Anne has been full of good stuff lately.  She's sometimes calling me the names I call her.  Like when I put her to bed lately, she'll tell me, "Goodnight big angel." (vs. me telling her sweet or little angel).  Or, "You're such a sweet little peanut," is what she said tonight.  On a more serious note, when she was praying, it was the first time, unprompted, that she prayed for anyone who needed prayers "even if they don't like God."  That last part really struck me - that she considered the fact that others may not be in much of a relationship with God at this time, and then even more how she wanted to pray for those people.  I just really thought it was rather profound for her to say that.  Hmm, from the mouths of babes.  Jesus' words in action about the children and the Kingdom of God!

Truth from subconscious thoughts???

Hopefully she doesn't always feel this way about those boys?!

Summer pics

These are just a few from our trip to Texas to visit the Graham cousins and Aunt Lissy and Uncle Gary.  Fun trip. It was me and the kids and they enjoyed the time.  We visited the Heard Museum and covered about a 2.5 mile hike with 12 kids and two moms!

First Day - a New Version

The first day of school rolled around last week.  This year looks a bit different.  After much discernment, prayer, and research, we decided to try homeschooling.  So away we go.  I still had to capture some pictures.  Luke was still sleeping, so he missed out.  Here's the rest of the gang:

May the fun begin!

Happy First Birthday, Luke!

Wow. Luke is one already!  Leyton even said it perfectly, "I don't want Lukey to be one. I want him to stay a baby."  So do I, but I'm excited to see him change, too. He's standing well, almost walking.  He enjoyed his cake very much after his favorite meal of spaghetti.  It was a great day. His shirt has a "1" on it, but that not is so busy it was hard to catch a good picture!  We sure love him.  And good thing, Patrick was in town this year! Ha, ha.  Sweet sweet boy.

The things we choose to wear...

Even when we don't have to!!

Poolside fun

We've had a cooler summer. Hope we can fit in a few more days at the pool!

Ready for Action!

The older two are playing fall baseball with a new team. They seem to have some great coaches, and they say the practices are, "the best ever, like MLB!"  Good to see them having fun. We bought some catcher's gear - he's ready to go! Looks like we will also have a pitcher/short stop. First game is next week.

Happy 5th Birthday, Anne!

Anne turned 5 on the 5th of this July. What a joyful little girl.  She of course loves Frozen, and loves swimming, playing dolls, and riding the EZ Roller with her neighbor friend.  I love when she opens her eyes so wide when she's excited or very interested in something, and her big blues shine through.  She plays well with kids her own age and those older & younger.  We spent the day around home and she wanted to have an Ariel party & cake, Pizza Hut, and swimming.  She got a cool new unicorn bike helmet, a new Ariel mermaid, books, clothes, and more.  It was a wonderful day to celebrate her.

It's been a while...

So Lissy is making me feel bad -- she's updated her blog.  Guess I need to get on it.  It's not that I don't think about it, it's just hard to find a free minute.  Always something else jumps in front of it, and then by evening, I'm just not ready to START on something after the kids are finally in bed (which in summer is pretty late these days).  Maybe I can set a goal to start updating --- I really don't want to let all the memories slip away, but sometimes it may happen.  We'll see.  I do have pictures, so maybe I'll start with that.

Cinderella and the Prince

Today Anne was asking to listen to music.  She asked to listen to the song Cinderella by Steven Curtis Chapman.  I was going to start it, but for a moment I blanked on who the artist was.  I said, "Who is that?"  Anne replied, "Cinderella, Mom."  I said, "Yes, I know, but who sings it?"  Her sure reply, "a prince."  Why wouldn't the song "Cinderella" be sung by a prince?

OK, so I have to admit I'm excited about this

So Leyton is slightly following in my footsteps!  He won the local free throw contest recently and gets to go on to districts.  He made 12 out of 15.  I may have actually been a little more excited than he was! Hee hee.

The Luckiest Lady

Anne and I sometimes play the game with saying "I love you."  She'll say she loves me, I tell her I love her.  Then one of us will say, "I love you more."  And it goes on, more, more, more, etc.  then sometimes she says, "I love you a million million million million (...lots of times she says it)."  Then I'll say, "Wow, that's really a lot!" And her reply, "You must be a lucky lady!"  If she only knew how true!

Time saver

Oh the time I would gain if a certain two year old didn't constantly take off all her clothes!  I have to dress that girl too many times a day. She made a few people chuckle at Costco today when she said she had to go potty and so she just pulled down her pants.  God help me.
